I arrived Byron Bay about 8am on Friday morning
after 11 hours on a very uncomfortable but very cheap bus (and about one hour sleep!)... I sense a pattern forming here!
I met a german guy called Karl who had travelled from the next village along from Anna Bay on the local bus to Newcastle so the 2 hour wait in Newcastle wasnt quite as boring as I imagined it would be as I had someone to chat with.. He has been surfing all round the world so had some interesting stories to tell.
I was greeted at the Byron Bay bus stop by the hostel minibus driven by a bleached blonde stoned dude wearing seriously ripped jeans, and a beautiful shell necklace.... turns out that is what most people in byron bay are like. I like it here but to be honest I expected the place to be prettier... Anna Bay was far nicer in terms of natural beauty. Byron Bay is nice because it has a chilled out feel about it and cafe/bookstore/surfer culture which I like but to be honest I am already feeling a little bit bored here.. probably due to the fact that it has been pissing it down with rain for 2 days?!
The hostel that I'm in at the moment (aquarius backpackers) gives a free meal every night when you stay so thats saved me some money but every few mouthfuls of food you get a hint of a taste or smell (i cant work out which) of rotten horse meat which isnt so nice! Still... its free! haha. I havent really done very much here I wanted to walk up to the lighthouse and most easterly point of australia this morning in time for sunrise but it was chucking it down at 5am so I went back to sleep! A group of us from the hostel (and some others from Nomads Hostel) went to Cheeky Monkeys last night which involved lots of hot sweaty bodies, dancing on the tables, cheesy music and lots of laughs so was secretly quite glad about not having to go walking at 5am this morning! I've decided not to stay here for New Years Eve, I am going to fly from Gold Coast Airport on Boxing Day to Townsville and go straight accross to Magnetic Island to stay there for 3 nights. From there I will hitch or get the bus to Airlie Beach and be in Airlie Beach for New Years Eve.
Hmmmm I dont think I have anything else to report! I feel I have been rambling again!
xx
Oh yes I do have something to report - I had the most amaaazing mango and macadamia icecream cone yesterday... the best ice cream I have ever tasted and surely that deserves a mention. Makes up for the free rank I had for dinner which tasted like toenails with kidney beans!
