Following the sun

SOOOOOO... you might want to get a cup of tea before you start reading this one?!...

First of all, I hear the snow in UK is really bad so if that is where you are reading from then I hope you are safe and not too cold! xx

Since my last (moaning) post, I am more or less over the tonsilitis, I'm just feeling very tired now. I have been on the yacht in rain/storms for the last 3 days and I have decided not to accept the job... I know your first reaction is probably "is she crazy!?" but this is why:

1)For starters, the last skipper I sailed with (Tony - who was a dude) has quit and the new skipper Wozza is a complete moron and pervert. The fact he is useless was good really as I've learnt some stuff about sailing (when he left the yacht in my very uncapable hands) and mastered how not to fall overboard haha, but Wozza was rude to all the staff and played Hilltop Hoods (a really shit Australian rap and hip hop band) really loud over and over and over and over again which was so bad it made me want to hang myself from the mast.

2) I have to either share a miniscule bed with the pot head pervert skipper or sleep on the very hard deck in rainwater sodden sheets and freeze my arse off... I slept on deck in the storms wrapped in wet freezing sheets last night and nearly rolled off the edge about 5 times it was so choppy! Both nights, the passengers went to bed and turned off the terrible music at about midnight and then I had to get up at 5.30-6am to do breakfast so needless to say with the freezing cold, soggy and lethal sleeping conditions I was pretty knackered just after a few nights on there.. I wouldnt really have been happy with 2 weeks or more like that!

3) The first day of the trip (when it was SUNNY) was excellent!! I thought i'd be nervous but I absolutely LOVED picking up all the passengers at the marina, walking them to the yacht, chatting with them, telling them where we were going to be sailing, cooking for them etc.. We had lots of fun, people did some great diving and snorkelling, we played drinking games and had a laugh in the evening and the canadian guys I made friends with in the hostel were on the yacht we moored close to so that was a really cool suprise, they are so nice! However as soon as the storms appeared on the second day it was soooooo different! No matter how much the crew all tried to jolly everyone up, people were pissed off about the rain which I suppose is understandable. The atmosphere was totally different. Several people in other places I've been to in Australia have said to me everyone runs a mile when it comes to the wet season here unless they dont have much choice but to stay. Hmmmm..... I think I know why now!

4) When it rained (which was pretty much most of the time) cockroaches came out in the galley in swarms and I was trying to kill them left, right and centre so the customers didnt see! They kept appearing in cups and bowls too which was a bit of a worry!!

All in all....if it was sunny / dry it would be a lovely job with loads of perks but although I dont want to seem like a quitter, I am not going to enjoy the job during the wet season and I didn't work 70 hours a week for 8 months to travel all the way accross the world to do a job that I am pretty sure will make me miserable!

So... I have decided I will pack my bag and head off again in the next few days... it's a shame because I like Airlie Beach but I dont like the rain, sleeping on deck in sopping wet sheets, being perved on by a pothead skipper, cleaning out german people's shit out of blocked toilets and being crawled on by cockroaches! Although I have been worried about dissapointing people, it's very refreshing to be able to make a decision, say "no, i dont want to do this", just pack my bag and move wherever I want to without any commitments... I had better not get too used to it I guess!

On the plus side to all this... I have learnt about sailing, I did enjoy the trip (even though I have decided not to continue with the job), I visited more of the Whitsunday islands including Hook island wilderness resort, I have met some lovely people including Ebony the girl who helped with some training, Christian who was the dive instructor onboard and some of the passengers who were reallllly lovely (even when pissed off about the rain! haha!) I have got a free ozsail tshirt and an anklet made out of deck rope. what more could i want... wooop! haha! Oh and if I wear my crew tshirt to the after party at Beaches bar tonight I get one free drink per 3 passengers! Anyway.....

HERE I COME, SUNSHINE. Wherever you might be! (I am off to plan my next move!) xx
